The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson: 9780143122357

De Bont is primarily known as a cinematographer but has also directed hits like Speed and Twister as well as non-hits like the second Angelina Jolie Tomb Raider movie and Speed 2. While this was David Self’s first script, he would also go on to write Road to Perdition and another maligned remake in The Wolfman. One of my favourite parts of the book is when Dr Montague talks about the construction of the House. He talks about how nothing is quite what t seems, an ostensibly straight stair actually bends inwards just a tiny bit, just enough to make you uncomfortable. Every dimension of the house is just off, just a tiny bit off that the human mind can’t quite cope.

A housewife who lived in Bennington, Vermont, she is best known for the large number of short stories in which she exposed the dark underbelly of small town American life. I remember seeing Robert Wise’s seminal classic The Haunting as a rental and was admittedly a little bored. I then got the opportunity to see it at the old Bay theater in Seal Beach and suddenly I got it. It’s truly a masterclass of old school horror filmmaking where what isn’t seen is better and creepier than what is shown on screen.

Dr. Montague, worried for Eleanor’s sanity, says she must leave at once. Eleanor finally agrees, and the group watches as she begins to drive down the driveway. As she departs, however, Eleanor pities the group for believing that they can thwart Hill House’s desire to keep her—she believes that she belongs to the house. She accelerates toward the oak tree, and right before she crashes and dies, she wonders why she is doing this and why no one is stopping her.

You will never understand it, but you grow used in a sense to what’s going on. I will admit, it took me far too long to realise what was going on. Because the entire reason this happens is because the book is about Eleanor’s descent into madness.

I had one of these for emergencies in high school where you had to literally pull the antenna up and out to make calls. The other one really took me back and I didn’t even notice it right away. Nell had to get directions to the Crain mansion and on her dashboard is an honest to God printout from Map Quest.

Surprisingly, with how many movies he has done, Neeson only has this as his entry into horror. Jones also must have had a sour taste in her mouth because this is also her only horror role apart from maybe Morticia Addams in the Netflix show Wednesday. In addition to The Haunting, she has been in an episode of Monsters, The Conjuring, The Addiction, and Leatherface from 2017. Wilson hasn’t done any in quite a while but also gave us his character in Anaconda and the criminally underseen Minus Man. Never normal by any means, but more familiar and you get to know it’s brand of madness and darkness.

He rents Hill House for a summer and invites as his guests several people whom he has chosen because of their experiences with paranormal events. Eleanor travels to the house, where she and Theodora will live in isolation with Montague and Luke. The Robert Wise original is better, the book is MUCH better, and the Mike Flanagan 10 episode take on the material is honestly the best interpretation of it period. I really wanted to have a change of tune on this movie as it’s been over 20 years since I saw it. It wasn’t a flop at all with it making over 100 million, but the reviews were middling then and I’d say middling at best now.

This doesn’t hold for Nell as she has fully bought in to her belief in ghosts, murdered children, and her relation to the house. They try to leave and take Nell with her but the house, and ghost of Crain fight back in a way that leaves two of the patients dead and the surviving two with little to explain the events they saw. That 12 line synopsis is obviously a very scrunched down version of a movie that is, in actuality, a bit longer than it needs to be. Eleanor is the first person to arrive at the home and is immediately struck with feelings of terror. She knows immediately that this is a bad place, somewhere that nothing good is going to happen. Her fear is only enhanced after she meets the caretakers, the Dudleys, who warn her that what she’s feeling is real.

So there are 5 main characters in my view (two more come in towards the end of the book but I’m not talking about them). One of the things that is brilliantly done here, is that the character arcs seem a bit backwards in a sense. The story is told from Eleanor’s POV and the further on the book goes, the harder it seems to be to really understand Theodora, Luke and Montague.

They, too, are interested in the supernatural, including séances and spirit writing. Unlike the other four characters, they do not experience anything supernatural, although some of Mrs. Montague's alleged spirit writings seem to communicate with Eleanor. Hill House is a mansion in a location never specified, surrounded by hills. Montague hopes to find scientific evidence of the existence of the supernatural.

The novel’s primary focus is on the theme of mental illness, as the characters experience extreme emotional distress and paranoia. It also includes elements of supernatural horror, with its ghosts and other mysterious phenomena. The book has been praised for its psychological depth, its ability to create a palpable sense of dread, and its nuanced depiction of mental illness. The horror inherent in the novel does not lie in Hill House (monstrous though it is) or the events that take place within it, but in the unexplored recesses of its characters' – and its readers' – minds. This is perhaps why it remains the definitive haunted house story. The novel has been adapted to film twice, in 1963 and again in 1999, both times under the title The Haunting.

It has served as a source of inspiration for dozens of novelists, short story writers, and filmmakers. A semester-at-sea goes horribly awry when Liv’s ex-bestfriend goes missing the first night of the program. As Liv tries to uncover what really happened, her discoveries lead her to believe that the ship holds eerie secrets, making her wonder what else it might be hiding. Those We Drown is an atmospheric debut perfect for fans of What We Harvest and That Weekend.

Phil Tippet helped with some stuff and I hope it was the practical stuff or set design because all of the CGI stuff here looks rough. I’ve mentioned it multiple times on this channel, but CGI comes in waves of quality both good and bad. Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel, ‘The Haunting of Hill House’, is regarded as one of the greatest ghost stories ever written. The novel follows the story of four people who investigate the mysterious and terrifying events that occur in the titular Hill House. As famous gothic horror books go, readers are also likely to find similarities between Jackson’s writing and other popular books like Anne Rice’s ‘Interview with the Vampire,’ and Stephen King’s ‘The Shining‘.

A finalist for the National Book Award, the book has been made into two feature films, a play and is the basis of a popular Netflix series. Jackson’s novel relies on terror rather than horror to elicit emotion in the reader, using complex relationships between the mysterious events in the house and the characters’ psyches. It is distractingly bad and how good everything else looks in the movie becomes a detriment when ghost Crain or ghost children try to come into the movie.
